The Kissing Booth: Review of the Ending Chapter

It was 2018 when we first got to meet Elle Evans, a fun high school student with a great passion for dancing who was living the most important moments of her teenage years. Now she is all grown up, and ready to finally take on her life!

Hello explorers, and welcome to another episode of the Acting Explorers Club! Today’s movie is quite known and is part of one of Netflix’s most popular teen movie series: I am talking about The Kissing Booth 3! The Kissing Booth is based on the 2012 novel of the same name written by Beth Reekles, while the movies are written and directed by Vince Marcello.

The first movie was released on Netflix on May 11, 2018, and it quickly became a huge success worldwide. The Kissing Booth is the story of Elle Evans (interpreted by Joey King), an unconventional teenager having a lifelong friendship with Lee Flynn. The two of them share a passion for dance and practice daily on an arcade dance machine.

Elle and Lee’s family are very close, and Elle grew up being in constant contact with Lee’s brother, Noah, a high school senior and one of the most popular boys in school. For a weird coincidence, they meet on the Kissing Booth organized by Elle and Lee to raise funds for the dance club, and from a kiss, their love story begins.

Spoiler-free plot of The Kissing Booth 3

The Kissing Booth 3 takes place during the summer before college. Elle still hasn’t made her mind up about whether to go with Lee to Berkley or Harvard with Noah. As if it wasn’t enough, Lee and Noah’s parents decided to sell their beach house, where the three of them grew up together and built many memories.

When Elle finally decides to go to Harvard, she needs to make up with Lee, who is very upset, and promises him that they will have a great summer and they will complete a beach bucket list of various activities they planned when they were kids. So the three of them spend the summer at the beach house with the excuse of helping packing before the house gets sold.

Unfortunately, many tensions will rise during the summer, as Chloe (a girl Elle thought Noah was having an affair with) and Marco (the person Elle kissed during a difficult moment with Noah in The Kissing Booth 2) show up and change the already problematic balance the couple had. Furthermore, Lee asks more and more from Elle and makes her feel guilty for the fact that they will not attend the same university. Will the three of them achieve to find a compromise and, finally, a happy ending?

The Kissing Booth 3: behind the scenes

In The Kissing Booth 3, we find again our beloved Joey King, Jacob Elordi and Joel Courtney. What is different from the other movies is that this time Joey is also one of the executive producers! This is Joey’s second experience with producing, but she surely was very curious to learn as much as she could:

“I’m a bit of a sponge. On set, it was more of me absorbing stuff from Vince and being like, “So why did we make that decision?” Just asking more questions. He was so willing to be even more collaborative with me and ask my opinion. I felt like I had a voice on set, but my voice really did come in on the back half of filming. I had a lot of say on what the final product was, and I also am very heavily involved in the marketing process. I’m very passionate about both of those things, and I feel like I am one of the target audiences. It’s fun to be able to have a say in something that I would want to watch at the end of the day.”

What you may not know about this movie is that it was actually shot at the same time as The Kissing Booth 2! One of the most difficult parts of acting on set is remembering the chronology of the scenes: what happened before and what happened after, and taking into consideration all the events that brought your character to the emotions you will perform in the scene you will film. Shooting two movies together can be very confusing! How did Joey King keep it all together?

I can’t give myself that kind of credit, because I didn’t. I knew exactly what I was doing every day, but when I was on set and my director [Vince Marcello] would come over and say a note or something, I was like, “Wait, are we in Movie 3 right now?” He’s like, “No, we’re still in Movie 2.” It’s not like they were very similar, because their story lines do take crazy different turns. But it was kind of fun to marry them together”.

Opinions on The Kissing Booth 3

The Kissing Booth has achieved to become a new classic of teenage movies and has many positive messages to pass to the young public. The most important in The Kissing Booth 3 is for sure to listen to yourself and don’t let people around you change who you are or your destiny. It is a hard lesson to learn, especially when the people influencing you are the ones you love the most.

Teenage years are the most difficult and determining of our lives, and it is also the period of most vulnerability for the majority of people. It takes courage to make decisions that do not satisfy people around us, but that we feel in our hearts to be the right ones. Elle in this movie discovers in herself the courage to follow her dreams, even if this means leaving someone she loves behind.

She does this knowing one thing: what is destined to reach us, will always find its way back.
